Hi, my name is Dr. Mitchell Gillick, and I was born in Guelph, Ontario. Rumor has it I was born in one of the dog runs at the OVC, where my father practiced small animal internal medicine. It’s fair to say my love of animals began at a very young age. I grew up in Toronto and, for as long as I can remember, I debated careers in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Architecture, although deep down I knew I was destined to become a veterinarian.
I chose to attend the University of Toronto, where I completed an Honors BSc with a specialty in Human Biology and a major in Studio Fine Arts. I was just two credits shy of a BA in Fine Arts when I received offers to both architecture and veterinary medicine programs. The decision was easy: I returned to the OVC, the place where I essentially began my journey.
In 2001, two amazing things happened: I graduated with my DVM from the OVC and, even better, I married the love of my life, Jennifer, who is now my business manager. With aspirations of pursuing specialty training in surgery, I played a game I like to call “Where in the World Will I Drag Jen to Next?” We started our adventure in Springfield, MA, where I completed a one-year rotating internship followed by a surgical internship at the Angell Western New England Animal Hospital (Rowley Memorial). We loved our time in the U.S. but were happy to return to Canada when I was selected to join the small animal surgery department at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon as a Clinical Associate overseeing the final-year vet students' spay/neuter/dental service. As cold as Saskatoon was (and it WAS cold), the people there were incredibly warm. I was fortunate to be accepted into their three-year small animal surgical program, where I earned my Masters in Veterinary Sciences (MVSc) in Small Animal Surgery.
We moved back to Toronto in 2007, where I worked in the surgery department at Morningside Animal Clinic while also fulfilling my dream of starting a new emergency and referral hospital. I was one of the founding partners of the Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital (TVEH), which opened in 2009, and I worked there until September 2020. I am now excited to offer my surgical services, experience, and expertise as a mobile veterinarian to various veterinary hospitals and their clients.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, our two kids, and our slightly insane German shepherd, Hannah (aka Fuzzypaws!). I’m also an avid photographer and love volleyball, watersports, downhill skiing, golf, bicycling, and training in martial arts.
